Greece and Egypt move forward on energy interconnection and climate cooperation

Greece’s Minister of Environment and Energy, Thodoros Skylakakis, and Egypt’s Minister of Electricity, Mahmoud Esmat, have agreed to advance the implementation of the electrical interconnection project between Greece and Egypt. Following this agreement, the national electricity transmission operators of both countries will begin their participation in the project. The two governments also committed to advocating for the project’s inclusion in the upcoming consolidated list of Projects of Common Interest (PCI/PMI).

During his visit to Egypt, Minister Skylakakis met with Hani Sewilam, Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation. They agreed to draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at addressing the impacts of the climate crisis. The MoU will focus on developing climate prediction models, modern irrigation techniques, reducing costs for desalination, and strategies for cross-border water resource management.

Additionally, Skylakakis held discussions with Karim Badawi, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources. They agreed to draft an MoU for cooperation on carbon capture and storage (CCS) infrastructure, which is essential for achieving climate neutrality. The two ministers plan to request regulatory changes from the European Commission to facilitate the export and storage of CO2 from Greece to Egypt. This initiative is significant for Greek industry and will help advance related projects in Greece.
