Europe: Electricity demand rises in most markets amid rising temperatures in early June 2025

In the second week of June, electricity demand rose in most major European markets compared to the previous week. Italy experienced the largest increase at 12%, driven by a rebound in demand following the Republic Day holiday on June 2. France saw a 2.2% increase despite June 9 being the national Whit Monday holiday. Spain’s demand grew by 5.2%, while Great Britain recorded the smallest increase of 0.4%. Conversely, Belgium, Portugal, and Germany saw declines of 0.5%, 1.6%, and 5.0%, respectively. The demand drops in Germany and Belgium were influenced by Whit Monday holidays, and Portugal’s decrease was aided by the June 10 national holiday, Portugal Day.

Italy continued its upward demand trend for the third consecutive week, with Spain extending its growth streak to four weeks. France and Great Britain also maintained increases for a second consecutive week. Meanwhile, Portugal experienced its second consecutive week of declining demand.

Average temperatures rose across all analyzed markets compared to the previous week. Belgium, Great Britain, and France recorded the largest temperature increases of 3.7 °C, 3.5 °C, and 3.4 °C, respectively. Germany had the smallest rise at 1.2 °C, while Portugal, Italy, and Spain saw increases of 1.8 °C, 2.0 °C, and 2.2 °C, respectively.

According to AleaSoft Energy Forecasting, electricity demand is expected to increase in most major European markets in the third week of June, with the exception of Great Britain, where demand is forecasted to decline, AleaSoft reports.
