North Macedonia: Electricity production drops 21% in August amid higher imports and lower output from thermal and hydro plants

In August 2025, total electricity consumption in North Macedonia reached 409,092 MWh, while natural gas consumption amounted to 20.2 million cubic meters. Coal consumption totaled 267,987 tons, and the use of petroleum products stood at 110,475 tons, according to data from the State Statistical Office.

Domestic generation covered 93.2% of the country’s electricity needs that month, while nearly all coal consumption (99.9%) was used for electricity production.

Total gross electricity generation stood at 381,301 MWh in August — a decline of 21.2% compared to the same month in 2024. Thermal power plants produced 153,281 MWh, accounting for 40.2% of total output, representing a decrease of 8.3% year-on-year. Hydropower plants generated 79,362 MWh (20.8%), down 28.1% from last year, while combined heat and power (CHP) plants produced 87,399 MWh (22.9%), a sharp 45.4% drop.

Wind farms generated 19,905 MWh, while biogas plants produced 3,982 MWh. Solar power plants, excluding prosumers, contributed 37,373 MWh, or 9.8% of total generation in August.

Electricity imports increased to 150,637 MWh, compared to 125,863 MWh in August 2024, while exports fell to 122,846 MWh from 177,822 MWh a year earlier.
