Bulgaria sees decline in energy production and consumption in April 2025 amid refinery maintenance

According to the Bulgarian National Statistical Institute, both electricity production and consumption experienced a monthly decline in April 2025. Electricity output dropped by 5 percent compared to March, totaling 3,298 GWh, while consumption fell by 8.8 percent to 2,684 GWh.

Natural gas consumption also saw a significant decline, dropping by 16.1 percent month-on-month to 219 million cubic meters. Domestic production of natural gas remained unchanged at 1 million cubic meters. When compared to April 2024, electricity production increased by 3.3 percent and consumption rose by 11.6 percent. Natural gas consumption was also up by 6.8 percent year-on-year.

In the oil sector, the production of unleaded petrol decreased by 9.1 percent to 10,000 tons in April, while its consumption surged by 33.3 percent, reaching 56,000 tons. Diesel production dropped sharply by 43.9 percent to 23,000 tons, and its consumption declined by 55 percent, amounting to 113,000 tons. The sharp fall in petroleum product output is attributed to scheduled maintenance at the country’s main refinery.

Consumption of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) declined by 5.4 percent to 35,000 tons, with no domestic production reported for the month. Solid fuel production dropped by 29.6 percent to 948,000 tons, while consumption decreased by 29.4 percent to 993,000 tons, reflecting a broader downturn in fossil fuel demand.
