North Macedonia: Energy consumption and production overview in April 2025

In April 2025, total electricity consumption in North Macedonia reached 460,185 MWh. Natural gas consumption totaled 6.79 million cubic meters, coal consumption was 305,848 tons, and petroleum products consumption stood at 101,241 tons, according to the State Statistical Office.

Domestic electricity production covered 73.6% of the consumed electricity in April. Nearly all coal consumed (99.9%) was used for electricity generation.

Total gross electricity production in April 2025 was 338,832 MWh, a decrease of 27.8% compared to April 2024. Breakdown by source is as follows:

  • Thermal power plants produced 152,185 MWh (44.9%), down 42.4% year-on-year.
  • Hydropower plants generated 131,730 MWh (38.9%), an increase of 42.2%.
  • Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants contributed 1,157 MWh (less than 1%).
  • Wind farms produced 20,100 MWh (5.9%).
  • Biogas plants generated 4,755 MWh.
  • Solar power plants produced 28,904 MWh.

Electricity imports in April rose to 156,224 MWh, compared to 106,734 MWh a year earlier. Exports fell to 34,871 MWh from 69,648 MWh in April 2024.
