Serbia strengthens energy ties with Azerbaijan at Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council

At the 11th Ministerial Meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council in Baku, Serbian Assistant Minister of Oil and Gas, Sasa Kokovic, emphasized the growing energy partnership between Serbia and Azerbaijan. He highlighted the completion of the Serbia-Bulgaria gas interconnector in December 2023 as a major milestone in Serbia’s integration into regional energy infrastructure. This new connection links Serbia to the Trans-Anatolian (TANAP) gas pipeline and the broader Southern Gas Corridor, granting access to diverse natural gas supplies from the Caspian region, the Middle East, and the LNG terminal in Alexandroupolis, Greece.

Kokovic pointed out that alongside the interconnector, Serbia secured an annual natural gas delivery deal with Azerbaijan for 400 million cubic meters through 2026, with the potential to triple this volume upon renewal of the agreement. He also discussed future collaborative efforts in energy production, particularly the construction of a gas-fired power plant in Serbia, noting the mutual interest in advancing this initiative, given Azerbaijan’s reliance on natural gas for electricity generation.

Looking ahead, Kokovic shared that Serbia plans to expand its gas infrastructure by constructing two additional gas pipelines connecting the country to North Macedonia and Romania within the next three years. This expansion is expected to further solidify Serbia’s energy network and enhance its regional energy security.
