Europe: February price of CO2 emission rights was the lowest since July 2021

CO2 emission rights futures in the EEX market for the reference contract of December 2024, reached an average price of €57.61/t in February. According to data analyzed at AleaSoft Energy Forecasting, this represents a 15% decrease compared to the previous month’s average, €67.43/t.

When compared to the February 2023 average, €99.42/t, the February 2024 average was 42% lower. As a result of these price declines, the February 2024 average was the lowest since July 2021.

The decline in demand had a downward influence on CO2 emission rights futures prices during February. The fall in gas prices contributed to this decline in demand, as the use of this fuel for electricity generation implies a lower demand for CO2 emission rights compared to the use of coal.
