Unit B1 of coal-fired thermal power plant Nikola Tesla B (TENT B) entered trial operation in the early hours of 26 November, following its lengthy overhaul and modernization.
The statement from power utility EPS said that the unit’s installed capacity has been increased by 20 MW to 670 MW, along with an increase of its operational life and efficiency. This is all due to a 90 million euros worth modernization, most of which (70 million euros) was used for the overhaul of the boiler facility.
In addition to the increased capacity, life cycle and efficiency, this revitalization project has also upgraded the conditions of environmental protection. The installation of the system for the reduction of nitrogen oxides will reduce the emission of these compounds to below 200 milligrams per cubic meter.
The installation of desulfurization facilities at TENT A is currently ongoing, while the project for the installation of such facilities at units of TENT B has just started.
Currently, Serbia produces almost 70 % of its electricity from coal and, unlike many European countries, does not have a clear coal phase-out deadline.
