Greece, Network congestion blocks further small-scale RES licensing

Many applications for network connection of small-scale renewable projects in Greece are currently being turned down as the network capacity in some regions has reached its limit.

According to data published by electricity distribution system operator DEDDIE, medium-voltage electricity network is unable to accept more connections in 40 % of the country, including western Macedonia.

This issue is primarily related to small-scale renewable energy projects. Bigger projects are connected to the high-voltage network, managed by the transmission system operator ADMIE.

In February, DEDDIE’s parent company PPC signed an agreement for a 100 million euros loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) aimed to expand the electricity distribution network across the mainland and islands so as to meet rising demand and improve the security of electricity supply.
