Solar and wind energy trends in Europe: Iberian solar growth and widespread wind gains in late May

In the week of May 19, solar photovoltaic energy production increased for the third consecutive week in the Iberian markets. Spain experienced the largest rise with an increase of 10 percent, while Portugal saw an 8.9 percent growth. In contrast, the markets of Germany, Italy, and France reversed the previous week’s upward trend and recorded declines. Germany registered the most significant drop at 17 percent, followed by Italy with a decrease of 11 percent, and France with the smallest reduction at 3.2 percent.

Despite the overall decline in some regions, the markets of Italy, France, and Portugal achieved solar photovoltaic energy production records during the week. On Monday, May 19, Italy reached its highest solar energy production for a day in May with 149 gigawatt-hours, marking the second highest value in the country’s history. On May 23, France set a new all-time solar energy production record with 142 gigawatt-hours. Portugal followed with a new historical maximum of 26 gigawatt-hours on May 24.

Looking ahead to the week of May 26, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting projects a decrease in solar energy generation in Italy, Germany, and Spain.

During the fourth week of May, wind energy production increased across the main European markets compared to the previous week. Italy led with the largest rise at 67 percent, while Portugal registered the smallest increase at 1 percent. Both countries maintained a growth trend for the second consecutive week. Germany recorded a 27 percent rise, continuing its upward trajectory for the fourth week in a row. Spain and France also saw notable increases in wind energy production, with gains of 51 percent and 35 percent respectively.

For the final week of May, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting anticipates further increases in wind energy production in Germany and France. Conversely, wind generation in the Iberian Peninsula and Italy is expected to decline, AleaSoft reports.
