Slovenia: NPP Krško back online after scheduled maintenance completion

Slovenia’s only nuclear power plant, Krško, was reconnected to the national electricity grid on Tuesday, 28 October, following the completion of its scheduled maintenance program. Over the next several days, the plant will gradually increase power output in line with strict safety procedures, the operator announced.

The month-long overhaul, which began on 28 September, included refueling operations, detailed maintenance, and extensive inspections of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems. Modernization works were also carried out to further enhance safety, reliability, and overall performance.

Within the reactor core, 56 of the 121 fuel elements were replaced, securing a stable energy supply until the next maintenance cycle planned for spring 2027. The successful refueling ensures continuous operation and sufficient capacity for the next 18 months.

After completing hundreds of component and system tests, the Krško Nuclear Power Plant confirmed that all equipment meets operational and safety standards. For 2025, the plant expects to generate around 5.4 TWh of electricity, contributing significantly to the stability and energy security of both the Slovenian and Croatian power systems.
