Serbian state-owned power utility Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) plans to launch the overhaul of Djerdap 2 hydropower plant (HPP) in 2021, managing director Milorad Grcic has said.
“We start the reconstruction of Djerdap 2 in 2021 in order to avoid a reduction of national electricity generation capacity,” Grcic said in a video file posted on the website of news agency Tanjug.
EPS signed an agreement with Russia’s Power Machines company for renovation of Djerdap 2 during the official visit of Russian president Vladimir Putin to Belgrade in January.
Power Machines is in charge of the overhaul of Djerdap 1 HPP and plans to complete it in January 2021, EPS said in July 2018.
The Djerdap hydro power complex, located in the Iron Gate gorge on the Danube river, was built jointly by Serbia and Romania and commissioned in the 1970s. The Serbian part of the complex comprises Djerdap 1 and Djerdap 2 HPPs, which have installed capacity of 1,058 MW and 270 MW, respectively.
