Serbia should use biomass for heating purposes

Serbian Ministry of Mining and Energy is preparing a set of new laws and changes to the existing laws in the field of energy and mining, but it is also thinking of having a special law on thermal energy in the future. Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy Zorana Mihajlovic discussed with the representatives of the association of Serbian heating plants the possibilities of using renewable energy sources for heating purposes. Minister Mihajlovic stressed that Serbia is facing serious projects in the field of thermal energy, it has great potential to increase the use of biomass in heating plants, and reduce the share of fuel oil and coal, because that will mean a healthier environment. Also, it is important to finally enable all users of district heating services to have the opportunity to pay for thermal energy according to consumption, as well as to reintroduce the definition of the vulnerable energy consumer.

Chairman of the association Dejan Stojanovic informed the Minister about the key indicators of the functioning of the district heating system and the initiatives of the association related to solving the problem of heating plants and further development of this part of the energy sector. He said that Serbia has a very high degree of efficiency of the production and distribution system for thermal energy, which was confirmed by the World Bank, which ranked Serbia in the middle higher segment among the transition countries.
