Serbia: Fortis Energy and PowerChina collaborate on renewable energy investments

Turkish company Fortis Energy and its Serbian subsidiary have entered into a framework agreement with PowerChina International Group to jointly invest in renewable energy projects. This collaboration focuses on the development and construction of wind and solar energy projects in Serbia and the wider southeastern European region.

The agreement outlines plans for projects with a combined capacity exceeding 850 MW, which is expected to significantly enhance the region’s energy mix and support its transition to a low-carbon economy. The initiatives are set to boost job creation, stimulate economic growth, and provide clean energy to millions across the region.

Fortis Energy, which operates in several countries including Serbia, North Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro, is already engaged in significant projects in Serbia. These include the development of 509 MW in wind farms and 387 MW in solar energy projects. Recently, the company also acquired two biogas power plants near Pancevo.

PowerChina, which has been active in the Serbian market, had previously aimed to make Serbia its first European investment destination in renewable energy. In April 2023, PowerChina Resources and CWP Europe signed an investment agreement for the Vetrozelena wind farm, and in May, a 9.9 MW solar power plant was commissioned in Saraorci village near Smederevo, in partnership with German AVR Group.
