Serbia, EPS evaluates the possibilities of alternative fuels in the TPP

The investment and technical documentation will be the basis for the selection of the main equipment and will predict the amount of necessary investments for the reconstruction of the plant

In the future, waste as additional fuel could be used in the thermal power plants of “Elektroprivreda Srbije” (EPS) and thus additional amounts of electricity would be obtained. EPS recently announced a tender for the development of investment and technical documentation for co-combustion of alternative fuels in the thermal power plant “Nikola Tesla A” (TENT A).

– In addition to the removal of waste in a way that is satisfactory from the point of view of environmental protection, co-incineration of waste would reduce the consumption of the basic fuel lignite. The project refers to the co-firing system on the boilers of blocks A-3, A-4 and A-5 in the “Nikola Tesla A” TPP, and depending on the results, it could also be applied to the “Kostolac B” TPP – according to EPS.

The investment and technical documentation will be the basis for the selection of the main equipment and will predict the amount of necessary investments for the reconstruction of the plant. The task for designers is to make the documentation possible to obtain location conditions, opinions of the republican audit commission and the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

Only after that, the profitability of the project would be clearly seen. According to the tasks from the tender, it is also necessary to consider in detail the risks, limitations and impact of the implementation of the project on the operation and stability of thermal power plants.

– The designers will also determine the appropriate share of waste in the total fuel for the existing types of mills and boilers on the TENT A blocks, in accordance with the technical practice for plants of this type in the European Union – they emphasize from EPS.

The project documentation should include the preparation of a conceptual solution for the purposes of obtaining location conditions, the preparation of a conceptual project with a feasibility study, analysis of the waste supplier market and the preparation of a study on environmental impact assessment.

The designer should also define which permits and for which type of waste need to be secured for temporary storage, as well as the permits that EPS should have as a waste treatment operator.

Thermal power plant “Nikola Tesla A” has six units with a total power of 1,766 megawatts.

In accordance with the EU

All the necessary documentation should be done in accordance with the valid legal and by-laws. It is especially important that it complies with the requirements of the European Union directives for large fireplaces. One of the tasks of the designers is to define the effects of co-combustion on thermal power plant equipment, as well as to assess the impact on total EPS emissions.
