Serbia: Elektrodistribucija Srbije accelerates smart grid modernization with one million smart meters by 2026

Serbia’s electricity distribution system operator, Elektrodistribucija Srbije (EDS), is advancing its smart grid modernization program, targeting the installation of nearly one million remotely operated smart meters by the end of next year.

Dalibor Nikolic, Director of EDS’s Technical System, stated that the smart meter rollout represents a key pillar of the company’s digital transformation strategy. The initiative will enable more efficient network management and encourage consumer participation in optimizing electricity demand. With real-time monitoring and control capabilities, the upgraded infrastructure is expected to boost network stability and overall energy efficiency across the country.

In parallel, EDS is undertaking several large-scale infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving reliability and operational safety. One major project focuses on modernizing the low-voltage network by replacing deteriorated poles and exposed conductors with reinforced concrete poles equipped with self-supporting bundled cables. This investment, valued at over 100 million euros, is designed to strengthen network resilience and minimize disruptions caused by adverse weather.

Additionally, EDS is automating parts of the medium-voltage network by replacing outdated primary equipment at more than 2,500 locations and connecting them to a centralized remote control system. According to company projections, this upgrade will significantly shorten outage response times, streamline maintenance operations, and enhance the overall security and reliability of Serbia’s electricity distribution network.
