Romania to sign 245 million euro deal for NPP unit 1 overhaul

Nuclearelectrica is considering engaging energy solutions company Canadian Nuclear Partners to provide services linked to the refurbishing of Unit 1 of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant in a deal worth up to CAD 358.9 million (244.8 million euros).

Canadian Nuclear Partners will provide project management services, technical assistance, consultancy and staff training for the planned refurbishing of Unit 1, according to a filing with the Bucharest Stock Exchange. Canadian Nuclear Partners is the Romanian subsidiary of Canada’s Laurentis Energy Partners, itself a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ontario Power Generation.

Nuclearelectrica updated its April 25 shareholders’ meeting agenda to include contract approval, following a request from its majority shareholder, Romania’s Ministry of Energy, according to the filing.

In 2022, Nuclearelectrica’s shareholders approved a 1.85 billion euro project for the overhaul of NPPS’s Unit 1.

In February, Italian power engineering company Ansaldo Energia said that its unit Ansaldo Nucleare signed a dear for the overhaul of Unit 1 and it will help to develop two more units at NPP Cernavoda, backed by up to 2 billion euro in financing from Italian state investment agency SACE.

In 2023, Nuclearelectrica booked a preliminary net profit of 2.482 billion lei, down from 2.764 billion lei (499.4 million euro) in 2022, it said in an unaudited financial report issued in February.
