Romania, OMV Petrom to invest 130 million euros in new aromatic products unit at Petrobrazi refinery

The largest Romanian oil and gas company OMV Petrom said that it will invest in the next three years about 130 million euros in its Petrobrazi refinery for the construction of a new unit of aromatic products.

The new unit will operate at modern BAT (Best Available Technology) operating standards with low environmental impact. The processing capacity of the new unit is about 1,500 tons/day of reformed petrol.

Member of the OMV Petrom Board of Directors responsible for Refining and Marketing Radu Caprau said that the demand for petrol continues to be robust in southeastern Europe. In parallel with the development of the offer of alternative mobility products, the company wants to provide its customers with the products they need, at high environmental standards. He added that other significant investments at Petrobrazi refinery are to follow, both for the technological efficiency of the refinery and for the production of second generation bio-fuels.

The process of replacing the current unit of aromatic products will be carried out between 2023 and 2025. The existing aromatic products units at the refinery was put into operation in 1961. The new unit should be commissioned in 2026, which will ensure continuity in the production of petrol with a volumetric benzene content of less than 1 %, according to current European standards.

Petrobrazi refinery has a total crude oil processing capacity of 4.5 million tons per year. Since 2005, OMV Petrom has invested more than 1.8 billion euros in the refinery, a third of this investment contributing to the reduction of its environmental impact.
