Romania: NEPI Rockcastle launches first solar power plant as part of €110 million green energy program

NEPI Rockcastle, the largest owner and operator of shopping centers in Central and Eastern Europe, has completed its first solar power plant in Chisineu-Cris, Arad County. The project is part of the company’s broader 110 million-euro renewable energy program across the region, which combines rooftop solar systems on existing retail properties with two large greenfield projects in Romania totaling 159 MW of installed capacity.

The newly completed solar facility in western Romania represents an investment of approximately 30 million euros. Built on a 51-hectare site, the plant has an installed capacity of 54 MW and was completed in just ten months. Once fully operational, it is expected to produce around 70,000 MWh of electricity annually—enough to cover the consumption of more than 29,000 Romanian households.

The project was developed in partnership with LONGi, ENEVO Group, and Electroechipament Industrial (EEI). According to NEPI Rockcastle, this represents the largest solar project in Romania designed specifically for commercial infrastructure and the first of its kind launched by a company from the commercial real estate sector.

The company emphasized that its long-term goal is to become a significant renewable energy producer, supporting the sustainability of its retail portfolio across Central and Eastern Europe. NEPI Rockcastle currently manages assets worth over 8 billion euros and operates 60 commercial properties in eight countries. Alongside its renewable energy strategy, the company is continuing to expand through a 795 million-euro investment program and recent acquisitions in Poland valued at around 760 million euros.
