Romania: Hidroelectrica launches first solar project at hydropower plants on Olt River

Romanian electricity producer Hidroelectrica has signed a contract to fully implement a solar energy project at its hydropower plants (HPPs) along the middle and lower Olt River. This marks the company’s first foray into solar energy and represents a key step in diversifying its renewable energy portfolio.

The project aims to capitalize on the solar potential of existing infrastructure by installing photovoltaic systems on the rooftops of 20 HPPs. Servelect was awarded the contract through a competitive bidding process, with Electroplus selected as the subcontractor. The total contract value is €1.8 million (excluding VAT), with a completion timeline of 24 months—four months for design and 20 for implementation.

The installation will feature 620 W solar panels, 100 kW inverters, and energy optimizers, amounting to a total installed capacity of 2,955 kW. Once operational, the system is expected to generate approximately 3,710 MWh of electricity annually.

Hidroelectrica described the initiative as a milestone in its green transition strategy, showcasing how existing hydro infrastructure can be leveraged for multi-source renewable energy production.
