Romania: Electricity consumption rises slightly, imports surge in 2025

Romania’s electricity consumption reached 29.37 TWh in the first seven months of 2025, up 0.1 % compared to the same period in 2024, according to the National Institute for Statistics (INS). Industrial consumption fell by 1 % to 22.11 TWh, while household use increased by 3.9 % to 7.03 TWh. Public lighting dropped 7 % to 230.4 GWh.

Electricity production totaled 29.21 TWh, down 7.6 % year-on-year. Thermal generation fell 3.5 % to 9.57 TWh, hydropower plunged 26 % to 7.21 TWh, and nuclear output from Cernavoda rose 0.7 % to 6.11 TWh. Wind generation declined 9.6 % to 3.4 TWh, while solar output, including prosumers, surged 37.8 % to 2.93 TWh.

Romania exported 8.11 TWh of electricity during this period, a 23.8 % increase, but imports jumped 54.1 % to 11.12 TWh.

Primary energy production fell 4 % to 9,543.8 million tons of oil equivalent. Coal output declined 2 %, oil fell 7.6 %, and natural gas decreased 2 %.
