Romania: Electricity consumption and production trends in January 2025

In January 2025, electricity consumption in Romania totaled 4.46 TWh, marking a 1.4% decrease compared to the same month in 2024, according to data from the National Institute for Statistics (INS).

Industrial electricity consumption accounted for 3.36 TWh, a 4.8% drop from the previous year. In contrast, household consumption rose by 11.1%, reaching 1.06 TWh. Public lighting usage fell by 4.3%, amounting to approximately 42 GWh.

On the production side, total electricity output in January 2025 was 4.41 TWh, representing a significant 19.1% decrease compared to 2024. Thermal power plants produced 1.9 TWh, down by 4.7%. Hydropower generation saw a sharp decline of 42.6%, dropping to 872 GWh, while nuclear power production at Cernavoda fell slightly by 0.2%, amounting to 1.02 TWh. Wind power generation also decreased by 38.2%, reaching 498 GWh. However, solar power production increased by 11.1%, reaching 117.4 GWh.

In terms of trade, Romania exported 1.11 TWh of electricity in January 2025, a 4% increase compared to the previous year. On the other hand, electricity imports surged by 132%, totaling 1.69 TWh.

Regarding primary energy resources, Romania’s total production in January 2025 amounted to 1,431.1 million tons of oil equivalent, a 5.8% decrease from January 2024. Coal production stood at 172.1 million tons of oil equivalent.
