Romania: EBRD weighs €40 million financing for 190 MW of new solar capacity

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is considering providing up to 40 million euros in financing to support the development of three solar power plants in Romania with a combined planned capacity of 189.7 MW.

The funding would go to local special purpose vehicles Solar World, RB Solar Energy, and Energie Soleil, which are developing the 61.9 MW Sadova plant in Dolj county and the Dobrun 1 and Dobrun 2 projects in Olt county with a total of 127.8 MW. Norwegian developer Scatec holds a 65 percent stake in each company, while Turkish partner Defic Globe Enerji owns the remaining 35 percent.

The proposed loan would help cover construction costs and initial operations. Once operational, the three solar plants are expected to generate around 286,900 MWh of electricity annually and prevent approximately 118,908 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. A portion of the financing risk would be reduced through a first-loss guarantee under the European Union’s InvestEU program, within the EBRD’s General Debt Product and Sustainable Infrastructure Window.

Scatec currently manages a global portfolio of solar and renewable projects totaling 6.2 GW, spanning both operating and under-construction assets across five continents.
