Romania, Black Sea gas production to start next spring

Romanian Minister of Energy Virgil Popescu said that Romania will benefit from one billion cubic meters of gas from its own production in the Black Sea during the next winter season.

The gas in question is expected from the Midia perimeter operated by Black Sea Oil and Gas (BSOG), where the operations are at an advanced stage, and the investor only expects the offshore law to be amended before beginning production.

In the first eleven months of 2021, Romania produced 5.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas and imported 2.2 billion cubic meters, therefore
the supplementary domestic production will most likely decrease the imports, however, it will not turn the country into a net exporter. In order to achieve this, the other major perimeter – Neptun Deep, operated by OMV Petrom and ExxonMobil (soon to be replaced by Romgaz), needs to begin production.

Minister Popescu also reminded of the onshore projects such as Caragele, operated by stateowned Romgaz, where the production is expected
to begin in 2023. Caragele perimeter is estimated at about 30 billion cubic meters, and the Neptun Deep perimeter is at 42-84 billion cubic meters of gas. The estimated reserves in the Midia perimeter amount to between 20 and 30 billion cubic meters.
