Romania: 275 million euros for the SMR project

Financial support from the United States, Japan, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates for the development of the small modular reactor (SMR) in Romania could amount up to 275 million euros, US President Joe Biden announced on the sidelines of the Hiroshima Summit.

US company NuScale announced in November 2021 that it plans to build the first small modular reactors (SMR) in Romania in cooperation with Nuclearelectrica.

These commitments, together with the new commitments from Romania, support the acquisition of materials with long manufacturing time, the completion of the engineering analysis and front-end design (FEED), the provision of experts in project management and the regulatory activities of the plant.

In addition to the 275 million dollars firm financing, the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and the US Export-Import Bank (EXIM) issued letters of interest indicating potential funding worth 1 and 3 billion dollars, respectively.
