North Macedonia: Energy consumption and production in January 2025

In January 2025, total electricity consumption in North Macedonia reached 775,397 MWh, while natural gas consumption stood at 43.68 million cubic meters. Coal consumption amounted to 334,316 tons, and petroleum product consumption totaled 82,785 tons, according to data from the State Statistical Office.

Domestic production covered 69.7% of the country’s electricity needs, with 98.8% of the total coal consumption used for electricity generation.

Total net electricity production in January stood at 510,686 MWh, marking a 7.9% decrease compared to the same month in 2024. Of this:

  • 198,078 MWh (38.8%) was generated by thermal power plants, a 2.6% decline year-over-year.
  • 131,700 MWh (25.8%) came from hydropower plants, down 15.2%.
  • 153,875 MWh (30.1%) was produced in combined heat and power (CHP) plants, a 5.3% drop.
  • 12,602 MWh (2.47%) was generated by the Bogdanci wind farm.
  • 1,219 MWh came from biogas power plants.
  • 13,212 MWh was produced by solar power plants.
