North Macedonia: Electricity production rises amid shifts in energy mix

According to data from the State Statistical Office, domestic electricity production accounted for 80.4% of the total electricity consumed in March 2025. Nearly all coal consumed, 99.9%, was used specifically for electricity generation.

The total gross electricity production in Macedonia for March 2025 reached 469,417 MWh, representing a 1.7% increase compared to the same month in the previous year. Thermal power plants contributed the largest share, producing 264,289 MWh, which is 56.3% of the total and reflects a significant 19.8% rise from March 2024.

Hydropower plants generated 92,621 MWh, making up 19.7% of the total production, but this was a decline of 29.3% compared to the previous year. Combined heat and power (CHP) plants produced 55,820 MWh, or 11.9%, marking a 17.2% decrease.

Wind farms contributed 22,450 MWh, representing 4.78% of electricity production. Biogas power plants produced 4,477 MWh, while solar power plants generated 29,760 MWh in March.

Regarding electricity trade, imports totaled 190,601 MWh, slightly lower than the 194,309 MWh imported in March 2024. Exports increased modestly, reaching 75,976 MWh compared to 72,942 MWh the previous year.
