Montenegro: EPCG advances plans for battery energy storage systems with up to 300 MWh capacity

Montenegro’s state-owned power utility, EPCG, has initiated the preparation of a feasibility study and project design for the procurement of battery energy storage systems (BESS) with a total capacity ranging from 240 to 300 MWh.

According to Zoran Miljanić, a member of EPCG’s Board of Directors, the first phase of procurement is already underway, with storage capacities of up to 120 MWh per site. EPCG has held over 20 meetings with various stakeholders, including BESS manufacturers, system integrators, financial institutions, co-investors, and technical assistance organizations. Representatives from the United States, France, China, Japan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro have participated in these discussions, helping EPCG refine technical specifications, assess equipment availability, and evaluate supply chain efficiency.

The project envisions deploying battery storage systems across multiple locations, including a 60 MWh system at HPP Perućica, two 60 MWh systems at EPCG’s Nikšić steel mill, and another 60 MWh system at TPP Pljevlja. Additionally, a 5 MWh battery storage unit is planned for the future 5 MW Kapino Polje solar power plant.
