Montenegro: Construction progresses on Gvozd wind farm, a major step in renewable energy transition

Concrete pouring has begun for the first of eight foundations that will support the wind turbines of the Gvozd wind farm, located near Nikšić. This ambitious project, with an estimated value of around 82 million euros, stands among the most significant energy developments currently underway in Montenegro. The state-owned power utility EPCG is the investor behind the project, while the construction is being carried out by Bemax, a company with prior experience in wind energy infrastructure, having worked on the Krnovo and Mozura wind farms.

The construction schedule is designed for swift execution. By the end of this month, three more turbine foundations are expected to be completed, with the final four planned for early September. Simultaneously, preparations to connect the turbines to the power grid will begin in July. The entire project is set to be finalized by May 2026. Positioned in the hilly region between Nikšić and Šavnik, near the existing Krnovo wind farm, Gvozd will feature eight turbines, each mounted on a foundation with a 25-meter diameter.

The Gvozd wind farm is not only an important infrastructure project but also a strategic move in Montenegro’s transition to renewable energy. With eight turbines planned in the first phase and the potential to expand by four more, supported by the construction of necessary platforms and infrastructure, the project will enhance the country’s energy independence. The 18-month construction timeline, which began in December 2024, is progressing steadily. To date, more than nine out of ten preliminary tasks have already been completed.
