Hungary: Implementation license application for Paks II

The application for an implementation license for two additional units at the nuclear power plant Paks will be submitted to the National Atomic Energy Office (OAH) on 30 June, said Hungarian Minister without portfolio, who is in charge of the project for the expansion of the country’s sole nuclear power plant Paks, Janos Suli.

Minister Suli said that project company Paks II will submit the application which contains 283,000 pages, including appendices. After that, OAH has 15 months to evaluate the application, and if it finds no deficiencies in the document, the license could be issued in September 2021.

He noted that the European Commission agreed in April to allow groundwork at the site to start early in 2021, before the permit is awarded.

The implementation license certifies that the two new units meet all relevant safety requirements.
