American liquefied natural gas (LNG) is increasingly gaining traction in the Greek market, with LNG arrivals at the Revythoussa terminal rising by 70%. This shift in demand marks a change from previous patterns, where market participants favored Russian pipeline gas over LNG imports.
In the first two months of the year, LNG imports reached 7.5 TWh, a 63% increase compared to the 4.6 TWh during the same period in 2024, according to data from the natural gas transmission system operator DESFA. Notably, 83% of these shipments were sourced from the United States. With more scheduled arrivals in March, total LNG imports for the first quarter are expected to reach 11 TWh, marking a nearly 70% rise from the 6.6 TWh imported during the same period last year. US LNG remains the dominant source, accounting for over 80% of total shipments.
In January, American LNG made up 56.2% of Greece’s total gas imports, while Russian gas accounted for 35%. In comparison, January 2023 saw US LNG representing 52% of total imports, with Russian gas holding a 32% share.
