Greece: Steady demand for renewable energy connections in despite challenges

Renewable energy investors in Greece are maintaining a strong momentum in submitting network connection term applications for new projects. In October alone, approximately 1.09 GW of applications were filed with the electricity transmission system operator ADMIE.

This trend has continued since the beginning of the year, despite challenges such as renewable energy source (RES) curtailments—implemented to prevent network overloads and outages—and instances of negative pricing due to excess generation.

In October, investors submitted 25 connection-term applications totaling 1.087 MW, a slight decrease from September’s total. Throughout the January-October period, the average monthly capacity of applications has been 1.047 MW, reflecting early-year figures when concerns over curtailments and negative pricing were less pronounced.

Conversely, applications for battery storage—which could play a vital role in addressing RES curtailment issues—saw a decline. In October, 10 applications were submitted for a combined capacity of 477 MW, down from 616 MW in September.
