PPC Renewables, the renewables arm of Greek state-controlled Public Power Corporation (PPC), said that it has selected construction group GEK Terna as the contractor for the construction of 550 MW solar power plant in Western Macedonia region.

Reportedly, GEK Terna offered the best price at the tender with an estimated value of some 216 million euros, among other contenders which included Mytilineos Group’s subsidiary Metka, Ellaktor Group’s Aktor, RES Invest, CMEC and AVAX.

The contract includes the construction works, equipment procurement, installation and commissioning of the solar power plant. The power plant, located at the depleted Ptolemaida coalmine near Kozani, should be built within 22 months.

According to its 2022-26 business plan, PPC is planning to reach a renewables portfolio of 7.2 GW in Greece by 2024 and 9.5 GW by 2026 in its effort to phase-out coal use. The company plans to invest 9.3 billion euros for this purpose.
