Greece: Net-billing system to be launched in May

Greek energy ministry plans to launch a net-billing system for self-producers by May 15, when PV Stegi, its subsidy program for roof-mounted solar panel installations under a net-metering system will be terminated.

Under new regulations, expected to apply beyond May 15, households installing solar panels for self-production will be compensated through a net-billing system.

Both net-metering and net-billing compensate solar system owners for transferring electricity to the grid when their panels overproduce, but the ways the two systems compensate differ. Net metering credits equal the retail electricity rate paid by customers for electricity. On the contrary, net billing credits equal the wholesale rate electricity companies pay for electricity.

Rules determining price levels for the sale of excess self-produced electricity to the grid will be included in an imminent ministerial decision. Though the energy ministry has yet to reach a final pricing decision for net billing, it appears most likely to set terms for the sale of self-production at prevailing wholesale price levels, energypress.eu reports.
