Greece, Government has approved the strategic hybrid hydro project

Greek Government said that it has approved the strategic hybrid hydro project proposed by Terna Energy, a subsidiary of construction group GEK Terna.

Terna Energy is planning to develop a hydro pump storage facility on the island of Crete worth 280 million euros, which would be the largest hybrid renewable energy project in Europe. The facility will use wind power to fuel the operation of pump- ing units channeling water between two separate reservoirs depending on whether power demand is high or low.

The company is planning to build an 89 MW wind farm consisting of 27 wind turbines and a 72 MW pump system in the existing reservoir of the river dam, as well as an electricity substation and high voltage overhead transmission line.

The project is expected to generate 110 million euros in additional revenue for local municipalities and communities over a 25-year period, while reducing electricity costs for residents of the island.
