Greece, Electricity consumption of residential and commercial consumers in April dropped by 6.7 %

According to data published by Greek electricity transmission system operator ADMIE, electricity consumption of residential and commercial consumers in April 2022 dropped by 6.7 % compared to the same month last year, with high energy prices being the main culprit for the decrease.

Total electricity consumption dropped by 3.79 % this April, since consumption of industrial consumers, connected to high-voltage network, rose by 3.3 %, offsetting the drop in other two categories. Higher industrial sector electricity consumption may be attributed to higher export activity, as well as long-term electricity contracts, which still safeguard some large consumers from high energy prices.

Electricity generation at gas-fired power plants dropped by 48.8 % in April compared to the same month last year, while lignite-fired power plants generated 57.2 % more electricity year-on-year. A significant increase in renewable energy generation was observed, with “green electricity” accounted for 57.34 % of the country’s energy mix.

Total electricity generation dropped by 19.9 % compared to April 2021.
