Greece: DESFA strengthens ties with Egypt’s natural gas sector through key agreements

Greek natural gas transmission system operator DESFA has signed cooperation agreements with Egypt’s leading natural gas companies, EGAS and GASCO, during the Mediterranean Offshore Conference (MoC) in Alexandria earlier this week.

The first agreement, a Cooperation Agreement with the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), focuses on carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). This agreement aims to foster collaboration in assessing the CCUS market across Greece, Egypt, the EU and beyond. It includes identifying potential business models and regulatory frameworks, sharing expertise, evaluating the prospects and costs of CO2 storage in Egypt, and addressing barriers to advancing the CCUS value chain. Additionally, DESFA and EGAS will establish a Joint Liaison with national and European authorities to enhance collaboration between Egypt and the EU in developing the CCUS market.

In a separate agreement, DESFA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GASCO, Egypt’s natural gas transmission system operator. This MoU aims to promote cooperation in developing essential gas infrastructure for the transmission of natural gas, hydrogen, and renewable gases. Both parties expressed their commitment to building a long-term partnership, which includes investigating technical requirements for new connections, pipelines, and interconnectors.

The collaboration will involve exchanging technical and operational expertise in gas transmission and processing. DESFA and GASCO plan to work together on innovative decarbonization solutions and green energy initiatives, such as hydrogen and CCUS projects. They will also focus on regulatory compliance, market analysis, and risk management to optimize their strategies and align regulatory frameworks for cross-border gas flows and investments.

A significant aspect of the MoU is the enhancement of LNG infrastructure, including storage, regasification, and transportation. DESFA’s extensive experience with LNG import terminals, such as the Revythoussa LNG terminal and the KIPIC LNG terminal in Kuwait, will be leveraged to optimize GASCO’s LNG supply chain.
