Greece: Deadlines for RES projects completion extended

According to the legislation, renewable energy and combined heat and power (CHP) projects whose completion deadline and network connection agreements expire before 30 June will be granted a six-months extension. As one in a set of measures adopted by the Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou as a country’s response to coronavirus crisis, deadlines for the completion of renewable energy projects have been extended.

For those expiring in the second half of the year, the deadline has been extended by additional four months.

Last month, RES investors, who obtained licenses at auctions held in 2019 and are obliged to complete their projects within next 6 to 18 months, sought for deadline extension of at least 6 to 12 months, as a result of ongoing coronavirus outbreak. Investors claimed that they will not be able to install solar and wind energy facilities on time, thus facing potential damages worth hundreds of millions of euros. In addition, RES system suppliers and project contractors worldwide are overwhelmed by the extraordinary conditions and have no way of meeting delivery schedules.

The legislation also sets a 30 September deadline for the start of operation of not-yet-operational RES and CHP power plants with power purchase agreements (PPA) signed before 31 December 2015.
