Greece completes trial connection of Damasta substation in Crete-Attica interconnection

Greece has successfully conducted the trial connection of the Damasta high-voltage substation to Crete’s electricity network, marking a key milestone in the Crete-Attica interconnection project.

The test was carried out by Ariadne Interconnection, a subsidiary of Greek electricity transmission system operator ADMIE, which is overseeing the project. The Damasta substation, the largest of its kind on the island, operates at 150 kV and features 17 fully digitalized gateways along with advanced enclosed technology. It serves as the main link between Crete’s electricity network and its connection to mainland Greece. The trial is part of an extensive process involving system checks and equipment verification at converter stations on both ends of the link.

Testing for the Crete-Attica interconnection began in late 2024, with full operational status anticipated by the summer of 2025. Once the equipment and individual system trials are completed, large-scale testing will be conducted before integrating the connection into Greece’s national electricity network.

The project is co-financed through the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) from the 2014–2020 and 2021–2027 programs, with up to 535.5 million euros allocated to reduce electricity costs for Greek consumers.
