Greece, Applications for RES projects have reached the 2030 limit, a halt is being considered

Investors’ applications for renewable energy projects submitted to the Greek electricity network operator IPTO for the connection of wind and solar power plants already far exceed the planned capacity of the network for 2030 by 10 GW, taking into account the planned upgrade of network infrastructure.

This excess capacity has prompted the energy ministry to consider suspending new applications until authorities find solutions to already registered projects.

The IPTO has completed the assessment of the requirements related to 2020 and offered the successful bidders the conditions for connection.

The operator is now preparing to process requests submitted in 2021 and during the first quarter of 2022.

Currently, the total capacity of RES projects that have been put into operation, ie that have received the conditions for connection by the end of 2020, is 19.6 GW.

Applications submitted in 2021 and so far in 2022 have a total capacity of 19 GW.

An updated Greek energy and climate plan envisions an installed RES capacity of 25 GW by 2030.

Taking into account all network expansion projects included in the ten-year investment plans of IPTO and DEDDIE / HEDNO, distribution network operators, as well as plans for interconnection of national and cross-border network and planned energy storage projects, RES capacity in the country should reach a maximum of 28, 5 GW by 2030.
