Greece: 7.5 million smart meters in the next 6 years to be installed by DEDDIE

Greek electricity distribution system operator DEDDIE will replace some 7.5 million electricity meters across the country with new, digital smart meters. This is a part of the company’s 5-year development plan.

The project is worth around 850 million euros, will be partially financed through EU funds and it will take six years to complete. It envisages the installation of 7.5 million smart meters for consumers in low-voltage network and their inclusion in a new telemetric system with a capacity of 8 million connection points.

The new meters will provide monitoring of electricity consumption patterns and levels through home devices or web applications, which will enable consumers to shift energy-intensive practices to lower-cost time zones. Electricity suppliers will benefit from the project as these new systems will permit suppliers to shape demand-based pricing policies, offering flexibility to consumers for more competitive packages.
