Greece, 4 billion euros from the decarbonisation fund for the island’s energy transition

The energy transition plan for the Greek islands could receive as much as 4 billion euros in support from the decarbonisation fund, officials who participated in the event organized by HAEE, the Hellenic Association for Energy Economics, suggested.

The event, entitled “Costs of Green Transition and Decarbonization of the Island”, included the participation of leading authorities, such as the Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy, Alexandra Sdoukou.

Changing the model of energy production on the islands is of fundamental importance for the decarbonisation goals related to the islands, Sdoukou pointed out.

The government aims to incorporate as many RES facilities on the islands as possible, either in the form of hybrid energy storage projects or as independent solar and wind energy units wherever network interconnections are available, Sdoukou said at the event.

Costas Andriosopoulos, a professor at Audencia Business School and CEO of Aquo Energy Greece, estimated that the funds to be made available from the decarbonisation fund for the island’s energy transition could reach 4 billion euros, compared to the initial 2 billion euros, based on current prices of emission permits.
