Europe: Solar and wind output shifts sharply in November

During the week of November 17, solar photovoltaic generation increased across most major European markets compared to the previous week. The strongest growth occurred on the Iberian Peninsula, where Spain recorded a 39% rise and Portugal a remarkable 126% surge. France and Germany also posted increases of 4.2% and 7.2%, respectively. Italy, however, saw solar output decline for the second consecutive week, falling by 31%.

Both Spain and Portugal set new records for November solar production. On Tuesday the 18th, Spain logged its second-highest photovoltaic generation for a November day at 132 GWh, following the month’s record of 149 GWh set on November 3. Portugal reached its highest November daily production on the 20th, generating 18 GWh.

Looking ahead to the week of November 24, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting expects solar PV output to rise in Italy but to decline in Germany and Spain.

In the same week, wind energy production increased in the Italian and German markets. Italy led with a 70% jump after three consecutive weeks of declines, while Germany continued its upward trend with a 2.4% gain. In contrast, wind generation fell across the Iberian Peninsula and in France: Portugal saw the sharpest decrease at 60%, followed by Spain with a 22% drop, and France with an 11% decline.

For the final week of November, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting projects wind generation to increase in the Iberian and Italian markets, while decreasing in France and Germany, AleaSoft reports.
