Europe: Mixed trends in solar and wind energy production in November 2024

In the week of November 18, solar photovoltaic energy production saw a rise in Spain and Germany compared to the previous week. In Spain, production increased by 1.1%, while Germany experienced a significant 34% increase, reversing a five-week decline. On the other hand, Portugal, Italy, and France experienced declines in solar energy production. Portugal had the smallest decrease at 13%, continuing its downward trend for the second consecutive week. Italy and France saw more substantial drops of 17% and 24%, respectively, AleaSoft reports.

For the week of November 25, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting’s solar energy production forecasts predict increases in Italy, Spain, and Germany. In contrast, wind energy production showed a general upward trend across most major European markets in the third week of November, continuing its rise for the second consecutive week. France saw the largest increase, with a 145% rise, followed by Germany at 85%, and Italy at 61%. Spain registered the smallest increase at 36%, while Portugal saw a shift in its trend with a 15% decline in wind energy production.

Throughout the week, wind energy production reached historical highs or set new records for November in all the analyzed markets. Spain, Portugal, and France reached record wind energy production, with Spain generating 433 GW on Thursday, November 21. Portugal and France both hit their highest production levels on Sunday, November 24, with 110 GW and 441 GW, respectively. Germany also set a November record, reaching 1,005 GW, while Italy produced its second-highest amount for the month, with 174 GW generated on the 20th.

Looking ahead to the fourth week of November, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting’s wind energy production forecasts predict a decline in most European markets, except for Portugal, where production is expected to rise, AleaSoft reports.

Refining margins turn SEE into a residual market during tight cycles

High European refining margins are increasingly reshaping supply allocation, with refiners prioritizing markets that offer the highest liquidity and netbacks. In this context, Southeast Europe often becomes a residual market, receiving barrels later and at higher premiums. This pattern is...

Global supply risk feeds SEE volatility through margin and inventory channels

Global oil price shocks from geopolitical disruptions rarely pass directly into Southeast European markets. Instead, they filter through refinery margins and inventory management, shaping local prices in ways that reflect operational and logistical realities rather than crude prices alone....
