Engie Romania acquires 54 MW wind project as part of 1 GW renewable goal

Engie Romania has acquired a fully permitted, ready-to-build 54 MW wind power project in Mereni, Constanța County, furthering its goal of reaching 1 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. Construction of the Mereni wind farm is set to begin later this year, with operations expected to commence in 2027.

Once operational, the facility is projected to produce around 180 GWh of green electricity annually—enough to supply approximately 90,000 households. The wind farm is also expected to cut around 55,000 tons of CO₂ emissions each year, equivalent to the environmental benefit of planting over 900,000 trees.

This acquisition builds on Engie Romania’s recent renewable energy expansion. In 2024, the company launched its first hybrid wind-solar plant with a 57 MW capacity and acquired an operational 80 MW wind farm. Engie Romania currently manages 211 MW in renewable assets across the country, comprising three wind farms (178 MW) and five solar plants (33 MW).

The company is also preparing to commission a new 37.2 MW solar power plant in Ariceștii Rahtivani, Prahova County.
