Bulgaria: The construction of the hybrid RES project started

The first phase of a hybrid onshore wind, solar and storage project in Tenevo in southeastern Bulgaria have started. The project’s investor is EURA IPP, a joint venture of Renalfa IPP Eurowind Energy.

solar power plant with an installed capacity of 237.5 MW will be built in the initial stage of the project and it should be commissioned in early 2025.

The second stage envisages the construction of 250 MW wind farms and battery storage with a capacity of 250 MW/500 MWh.

EURA IPP CEO Elena Markova said that this will be the first hybrid electricity generating facility of its kind in the country and one of the biggest and most complex clean energy projects in southeastern Europe. She added that the hybrid complex points to renewable energy being a lead driver of the energy transformation of coal mining regions, thus boosting Bulgaria’s green transition.

In 2021, Renalfa and Eurowind Energy have established a joint venture company, EURA Energy, with the aim of investing in the Bulgarian renewable energy sector. EURA Energy holds a development portfolio of wind, solar and the production of hydrogen from renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of more than 1 GW and will continue working on the expansion of its portfolio in Bulgaria.
