Bulgaria: Revenues from the fee on Russian gas transit could be included in EU budget

Consultations between Bulgaria and the European Commission on the fee of 10.5 euros/ MWh on Russian gas transit imposed on October 13 are currently ongoing.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov said that analyses are in progress to determine if anything needs to be redefined from a technical standpoint, adding that the fee is not in contradiction with the general European policy, and it is possible that the revenues from this fee, estimated at over 2.5 billion euros annually, will go into the European budget.

The Prime Minister’s comments were prompted by the decision of Bulgarian President Rumen Radev to challenge the taxation in the Constitutional Court, because, according to him, conflicts with European requirements.

According to new regulations as of 10 November, importers of Russian gas and operators of transmission and distribution networks must report to customs the quantities of Russian natural gas imported or transported through Bulgaria in October. The fee must be paid until 14 November.
