Bulgaria: Electricity production trends for 2024

According to data from Bulgaria’s electricity transmission system operator, ESO, the country’s electricity production from January 1 to September 1, 2024, decreased by 7.56% compared to the same period in 2023, totaling 25.21 TWh. Baseload power plants, including coal and nuclear facilities, generated 18.11 TWh of electricity, marking a 15.8% reduction from the previous year.

In contrast, the contribution of renewable energy sources (RES) saw a significant increase. RES-produced electricity in the transmission network rose by 42.39% to 2,348.2 GWh. In the distribution network, RES electricity grew by 35.6% to 2,296.2 GWh.

Bulgaria also experienced a 1.43% decline in electricity consumption during this period, reaching 24.2 TWh. As a result, the country’s net electricity exports amounted to 1.01 TWh, representing a 62% decrease from 2023.
