Bulgaria announced the launch of a tender for the construction of energy storage facilities

The Bulgarian Ministry of Energy has announced the launch of a tender for constructing renewable energy storage facilities, in line with Bulgaria’s National Recovery and Sustainability Plan. This initiative aims to support the development and commissioning of electricity storage systems with a minimum usable energy capacity of 3,000 MWh. These facilities will be connected to the electricity transmission and distribution networks, facilitating an increase in the share of renewable energy—specifically wind and solar—in the country’s energy mix.

Caretaker Minister of Energy Vladimir Malinov highlighted that this investment will ensure the security and stability of Bulgaria’s electricity system. The program is expected to contribute significantly to the balancing and management of the electrical networks, which is crucial for integrating electricity generated from renewable sources.

The program’s budget amounts to approximately 613 million euros. While there is no minimum funding requirement per project, the maximum grant for a single project by one enterprise is capped at 76 million euros. Grant funding will cover up to 50% of eligible costs.

The Ministry’s statement also indicated that all investments under the program must be completed and operational by March 2026, with a progress check scheduled for May 2025 to assess the maturity and implementation of the projects.
