Bosnia and Herzegovina: Reconstruction of Bihac oil terminal to boost energy security and create jobs

The reconstruction of the oil terminal in Bihać, which began in July 2024, represents a significant step toward enhancing the energy security of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH). The terminal is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025.

Federal Minister of Energy, Mining and Industry, Vedran Lakic, stated that once the terminal is operational, the Federal Government will be able to create additional reserves of petroleum products in line with European Union directives. He also highlighted that the terminal’s operations will generate new jobs and involve various local businesses.

The project, which involves an investment of 10 million euros, is being financed through a credit arrangement with the Development Bank of BiH, finalized in late April 2024. The modernization process includes the repair and reconstruction of storage tanks, replacement of water pipelines and equipment, and the installation of new technological and fire protection systems. Additionally, the project encompasses the refurbishment of the substation, the installation of new cables, and the modernization of buildings and storage facilities.

Minister Lakic also emphasized that such projects are financed by reallocating 0.5 cents per liter of fuel sold, a policy that has already enabled the modernization of the Blazuj terminal. He further noted that the terminal’s location near the European Union makes it easier to transport petroleum products from EU countries, with significant support from the Federation of BiH Railways. This proximity enhances the terminal’s strategic importance.

Following the reconstruction, the Bihać oil terminal will become one of the most modern facilities in the region, incorporating the latest technologies in the oil industry, according to Minister Lakic.
